Intimate Moment was unable to make any impression in the 6F £150K Tattersalls October Auction Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, finishing 14th of 28 runners, 15 1/4L behind Under the Stars. The Group 3 winner of the Princess Margaret Stakes getting up to beat Mild Illusion by a short head with Bond’s Boy 2 1/2L 3rd.

Away from the track for 3 months with Sore shins and a spot of Ringworm, it is fair to say Intimate Moment’s targeted race was less than satisfactory particularly as she then picked up a lung infection causing her to miss a prep run for it. A decision to run was taken late knowing she was a little under cooked and also preference would have been for faster ground. Connections decided to take her chance given that even if she did not feature she would strip fitter next time out. As it was she put in a very creditable performance and was certainly better than the bare facts suggest.

Being drawn stand side turned out to be a real negative with 7 of the first 8 home coming from the far side where the track was significantly better which is often the case following heavy rain. Bumped at the start she was dropped in but with those in front running without too much pace the field was bunched and when she was asked to go forward she hit a wall of runners in front which forced her to drop away and to the stand rail in last position 2 from home. She made plenty of ground going into the dip but was never going to feature and was eased in the final 50 yards.

Connections will have struck a line through the race, wait to see how she comes out of it and regroup.
