About Trainer Philip 'Charlie' McBride
Charlie has worked in the racing industry for over 40 years and is generally regarded as one of the most astute trainers in Newmarket. His eye and feel for horses when purchasing coupled with his strict training beliefs, produces consistent winners for the yards owners under tight budget restrictions. Over the last 5 years and from 600 plus races he has a phenomenal 49.5% enclosure rate with over 23% finishing in the first 2 places.
Charlie’s career began as an apprentice jockey to Jack Clayton before becoming a work rider and stable lad for Bruce Hobbs. Then in 1985 he was appointed head lad with Lord John Fitzgerald and 7 years later, granted his first license by the Jockey Club. Some of the best horses he has ridden in their work include: TROMOS – Winner of the Dewhurst Stakes; Irish Derby winner TYRANOS; 2yo Group winner SISSLING MELODY, and Jockey Club Stakes Gp1 winner RAUSER.
In 1995 he joined Conrad Allen as Assistant Trainer, moving on to Willie Musson as Head Lad. After a period working abroad in Germany he returned to Newmarket and reapplied for his license which the Jockey Club granted in May 2003.
Charlie’s first Group winner as Trainer was in Germany in 2008 when MISS STARLIGHT (OR106), won The Al Maktoum Trophy (Hamburger Stutenpreis Gp3 for 3yo Fillies) and this was his breakthrough season as a Trainer. She, along with pmracing 4 time winner SOVIET SECRET, was sold to Ibrahaim Al Malki (Qatar). Eleven yearlings were purchased that year and all of them won – nine as 2yo’s and the remaining at 3.
These included BLUE MAIDEN (OR108) 2nd in the Sweet Solara, Nell Gwynn and Sandringham Stakes, and AUDACITY OF HOPE (OR104) 3rd in a GP3 race at Newbury and 2nd in the Jersey Derby, both horses sold to Earl Mack in America.
Their share of sales proceeds enabled Charlie’s family to make the move from their rented yard in Hamilton Road to Exeter House Stables in 2011 with their long term plan to purchase the adjacent historical covered ride and linked stables which they did late 2015. These Grade II Listed properties built c1835 contain the very first covered ride for exercising racehorses with linked stables. Previously owned by Brownlow Cecil, second Marques of Exeter and then Baron Meyer de Rothschild the properties required substantial renovation. The work was competed in 2017 and aside from the covered ride and large stables, also hosts lunging, horse walker and paddocks, transforming Team McBride’s facility.
Aside from Team McBride’s success with pmracing Charlie found success with both RAZOR QUEST & MY SEBASTIAN winning their maidens before being sold to Hong Kong The former having now won over £300k in prize money. There was also success for WALK WITH AN ANGEL who won several times in America. Many have been bred by his friend Chris Budgett at Kirtlington Stud. More recently the pair have had success with SQUASH (OR103), who was placed in Gp 3 stakes finishing 2nd in the Nell Gwyn and 3rd in the Chartwell. Both 90+ rated BRIGLIADORO and ZAK MAYO remain in training this season.
During this time McBride’s reputation continued to rise and in 2014 he was featured in the Racing Post after 85% of stable string won, propelling him to be leading British trainer for a £1 level stake profit. He finished 6th by win percentage mixing it with all major UK trainers.
There is no doubting Charlie’s racing expertise but at its roots this is very much a family affair which comes in the form of wife Bev and heir apparent son Sean, who both play an integral part of the business and although daughter Charlotte and younger son Phil have careers outside of racing both lend a hand when called upon. Indeed it would be no surprise if, longer term, Charlotte took more than just an interest in it. Overlay this with a loyal stable and riding team, long term working relationships with Vets, farriers, bloodstock, not forgetting the owners, and you have a recipe for success.
Judged by many of his peers to be one of the best and under rated trainers in Newmarket, Charlie and Team McBride are now receiving that recognition and pmracing are proud to be part of that team.
