Sparkling Diamond came so close to breaking her maiden when crucially hampered entering the final furlong at Kempton Park in a 6F Nursery on Tuesday. Instead she had to settle for a 1 1/2L 2nd to Dreamy Rascal who looked to be better placed of the two in the swoop to the finish.

Sparkling Diamond possibly did not make best use of her low draw but was placed handy enough as they swept through the first half of the race. However there was a lack of pace which led her to be pinned on the far rail that opens up on the straight. She looked to be making good progress before being badly hampered by Shaun’s Delight whose race was run and going backwards. She clearly had plenty left though, bravely brushing past Sir Rodneyredblood who was 1 1/2L back 3rd, but was never going to get to the winner in time.

It would be wrong to suggest that Sparkling Diamond would have won this race as it was not as clear cut as that, but she was certainly denied a huge opportunity to do so and it would have been a very tight finish. She should have every chance next time.
